“Green cleaning” has become an essential part of the facility services industry. The term refers to an approach to cleaning that seeks to promote health while minimizing environmental impact. The rise of green cleaning and the recognition of the need to “clean for health” has grown as research has underscored the effects of interior air quality (IAQ) on worker health and well-being. Modern facilities are much more “airtight” than their predecessors; and while this promotes energy efficiency, it can also compromise IAQ, as dirt, dust and gases can become trapped inside. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in health problems, such as asthma and allergies, which some attribute to these IAQ issues.
Green cleaning addresses the role cleaning has played in this. Where chemicals or other products are deemed to be harmful, they are replaced with “green” alternatives that have little to no negative impact on health or the environment.
Currently, the standards for these products are defined by Green Seal, an independent, non-profit organization that exists to “promote environmentally responsible production, purchasing and products.” Green Seal evaluates and certifies products submitted by manufacturers, and develops and promotes standards for a wide variety of product categories.
Green cleaning also encompasses cleaning methods and procedures, and is now an essential element in LEED facility certification. Environment Control provides green cleaning programs and required documentation for newly constructed and existing buildings seeking to gain or maintain LEED certification through the US Green Building Council.
